Masjid al Haram, Makkah
- The authority for the Two Holy Mosques offers free monitored luggage storage with receiving and delivery points at the main entrances and an electronic tracking system (source).
- Reported drop off points: the western courtyard (opposite Gate 64, also described as behind Restroom 6), the eastern courtyard next to the Makkah Library, Ajyad Street next to Restroom 2, and points at King Abdulaziz Gate (1) and King Fahd Gate (79) (source one and source two).
- Reported rules: bags only, up to about 7 kg, up to about 4 hours per person, and food, liquids and medicine are not accepted. One guide says an Umrah permit from Nusuk is needed (source).
- Process: hand the bag to staff for a security check, they tag it, you show your passport or ID, and you keep the receipt or card. Take a photo of the receipt.
- If you are late, the bag may be moved. You may still be able to claim it later, but it takes more effort.
Masjid an Nabawi, Madinah
- Suitcases and large bags are banned inside the Prophet's Mosque. Small items can go in the safety boxes in the outdoor courtyards (source).
- The boxes have limited space, so do not plan to leave big luggage there. Leave it at your hotel.
Our advice
- On arrival, ask your hotel to hold your bags until check in. Most hotels near the Haram do this.
- Go to the Haram with one small bag: water, phone, power bank, a small cloth and your hotel card.
- Keep valuables, passport, cash and medicine with you. Do not put them in a locker, because medicine and liquids are not accepted.
- Use the locker only for the time of your prayer or tawaf. Plan to return well before four hours.
- Take a photo of your locker receipt and note the courtyard or gate name.
- Departure day: store your bags at the hotel after checkout instead of carrying them around the Haram.
- Be careful of private luggage storage offers on the street. Use the official counters or your hotel.
