Where to stay in Makkah for Umrah

Clock Tower area (Abraj Al Bait)

Under 5 minutes to the King Abdulaziz Gate according to Halal Booking. Highest price tier. A self contained complex with food, pharmacies and prayer facilities, but lift queues of 10 to 15 minutes at prayer times are reported.

Jabal Omar

5 to 10 minutes to King Fahd Gate. Luxury tier. Newer and calmer, with air conditioned walkways and bridges to the Haram. Some hotels sit on a slope.

Ajyad and Ibrahim al Khalil

8 to 12 minutes via Ajyad or King Fahd Gate. Mid range and budget mix with the widest range of restaurants and shops. Lively and sometimes busy before Fajr, with steep hills. Many hotels offer buggy transfers.

Misfalah

10 to 15 minutes via Bab al Umrah or Bab Ibrahim Khalil. Mid range, a flat covered walk and calmer, which suits people using mobility aids.

Aziziyah and Al Shisha

3 to 5 km, so not walkable. The most affordable tier with larger rooms and quieter streets. Use shuttle, taxi or ride hailing. The source suggests allowing 20 to 30 minutes each way if you pray all five prayers at the Haram, and notes shuttles run most often in the 90 minutes before each prayer.

How to choose

Decide first how many prayers you want to pray at the Haram, then weigh walking time against price. Older travellers and families often prefer a shorter, flat walk.
