Wheelchairs and carts, Makkah
- Free self use wheelchairs (source): reported at the East Courtyard near Gate 19 (Bab as Salam) and the West Courtyard at Shubaika Bridge (Gate 64). Register your name and carry your passport or pilgrim card. Return the chair after use.
- Wheelchair with an attendant: needs online booking, according to recent reports (source). Use only attendants with an official numbered vest and avoid street offers.
- The sai walkway has a separate lane for wheelchairs.
- Pilgrims over 65 who find online booking hard can ask staff at the service points inside the mosque.
Wheelchairs and mobility, Madinah
The official Hajj ministry page lists vehicles for people with special needs moving around the mosque and courtyards, portable chairs, electric lifts and ramps beside the gate entrances, and light folding prayer chairs for the elderly.
Lost and found
- Makkah: report to the nearest Haram security post or guest care centre and keep the reference number. You can also report through the Absher electronic services under the Grand Mosque Security Force. A lost items centre is reported in the eastern courtyard next to the Makkah Library (source). Another guide places it near Gate 79 and Ajyad (source), so ask on site.
- Madinah: the Lost Belongings Office works with Haram security inside the Prophet's Mosque. Items lost in the women's areas may be held first at the women's section office.
- Passport: get a police report and contact your embassy or consulate in Jeddah or Riyadh.
- Bank cards: freeze them in your banking app straight away.
Lost people and children
- Go to the nearest guest care centre or a uniformed officer (source).
- Madinah: the main lost children office is at the Baqi wall opposite courtyard door 34C, with two more in the east and west women's prayer areas.
- Prepare before you enter: write your hotel and phone number on a card or make our QR ID card.
Security and police
Haram security officers in uniform are present at the gates and inside the mosques. At Masjid an Nabawi the official page lists security offices for complaints or reports at Al Siddiq Gate 2, Gate 7, Gate 33, courtyard gates 7A and 21A, and the Security Forces Command Office. For urgent police help call 911.
First aid and health
First aid points are reported along the corridors and at the main gates of both mosques (source), and there are hospitals near each Haram. In a medical emergency call 997 or alert a security officer. Pharmacies are listed in our directory.
Zamzam, food and water
- Zamzam water in cooled and normal containers is placed all around both mosques, in the courtyards and on the roofs. It is free.
- In Ramadan, millions of free iftar meals are served by the authorities and donors in the courtyards (source). Sit where the volunteers guide you and keep the place clean.
- Outside Ramadan, free food is not a regular service. Use the food courts in the malls.
Tahallul: haircut after Umrah
- Free official service: the authority for the Two Holy Mosques runs free tahallul stations. Reports mention mobile units in the courtyards (source), five stations opposite the Marwa area that can be moved when it is crowded, with trained staff and sterilised equipment (source, launched as a trial in Ramadan 2025), service reported round the clock for men and women, and lanes for elderly pilgrims and people with disabilities (source).
- Who can use it: pilgrims who have finished tawaf and sai and need to shave or trim to leave ihram.
- Large barbershop at the Clock Towers: Gulf News (March 2025) reported a barbershop with 170 chairs just steps from the Grand Mosque, built for more than 15,000 pilgrims a day, with an average haircut of about three minutes. The report does not give prices or hours, so ask on site (source).
- Use authorised barbers: the Ministry of Hajj advises pilgrims to use designated barbershops near the Grand Mosque, which it says use sterilised tools and licensed barbers (Gulf News, Nov 2024).
- Private barber shops: there are also paid barber shops in the area around the Haram, including a large barber area near Aswaq Al Safwa and the Abraj Al Bait hotels, with signs showing scissors and a razor. These charge their own prices, so ask before you sit.
- Tips: women should trim only a fingertip length of hair and do it privately, not at a public station. Check the Umrah steps on our Umrah guide.
Other services
- Free haircut (tahallul) service has been offered at the Grand Mosque (source), including mobile stations in Ramadan (source), so check with staff.
- Luggage storage and tracking points have been introduced near the Haram (source). Limits and hours change, so ask before you rely on them.
- Women's prayer areas and children's centres are available, especially in Ramadan.
