What the Kiswa is

The Kiswa is the black cloth that covers the Kaaba. It is made at the King Abdulaziz Complex for Manufacturing the Kaaba Kiswa in Makkah, which Arab News says covers 100,000 square metres and was established in 1928 as the Kiswa Factory. A 2017 royal decree renamed it after King Abdulaziz.

When it is changed

Traditionally the Kiswa was replaced each year on 9 Dhul Hijjah, the day before Eid al Adha. Reports say it is now changed on the first day of Muharram, the start of the Islamic year. Madhyamam reports that in 1444 AH a team of 200 Saudi technicians installed it under the supervision of the president of the Two Holy Mosques Presidency.

Materials

The base is black silk. Reports give about 670 kg of dyed raw silk, 120 kg of 21 karat gold coated silver thread and 100 kg of silver thread, with copper rings that fasten it to the base. Arab News notes the wire is not pure gold because that would not be flexible enough.

Size and weight

Madhyamam reports a finished weight of 850 kg and a fabric length of 16 metres. Arab News gives a covered area of 658 square metres. The two sources describe the piece counts differently, so treat the exact number of pieces as approximate.

How it is made

Arab News says weaving is automated on jacquard machines, and the embroidery is done by hand on silk pieces using traditional wooden hoops by more than 50 artisans, taking about eight to 10 months.

For visitors

The Kiswa can be seen on the Kaaba at Masjid al Haram. Tours of the factory are advertised by tour companies, so check the booking and opening details before you go.
